In the San Fernando Valley neighbourhood of Los Angeles County, California, there is a movie studio and theme park called Universal Studios Hollywood.
The studio occupies about 70% of the unincorporated county island of Universal City in California, and the remaining 30% is located within the boundaries of Los Angeles.
One of the most renowned and first active Hollywood film studios is this one.
"The Entertainment Capital of LA" is the brand's official marketing slogan.
The first of several full-fledged Universal Studios Theme Parks across the world, it was primarily developed to provide tours of the actual Universal Studios sets.
A brand-new, all digital complex was constructed outside the theme park next to the Universal Pictures backlot in an effort to consolidate all of NBCUniversal's West Coast operations in one location.
As a result, the new digital facility housing KNBC, KVEA, and NBC News alongside Noticias Telemundo Los Angeles Bureaus is located on the Technicolor SA-vacated Universal land.
The hotels in Universal City include the Sheraton Universal Hotel, the Universal Hilton & Towers, and Universal CityWalk, which has a variety of stores, eateries, an 18-screen Universal Cinema, and a seven-story IMAX cinema.
The park welcomed 9.056 million visitors in 2017, placing it 15th in the world and 9th among parks in North America.
Backlot fires
Nine times during the course of its existence, fires have damaged the backlot at Universal Studios Hollywood.
The first occurred in 1932 when four movie sets were destroyed and more than $100,000 in damage as a consequence of embers from a nearby bush fire being thrown toward the back lot.
A second brush fire damaged two further structures in addition to completely destroying one seventeen years later, in 1949.
A fire started intentionally in 1957 destroyed the New York street film studio set and cost a half million dollars to repair.
Ten years later, in 1967, when Little Europe and a portion of Spartacus Square were destroyed, twice as much damage was caused.
The European, Denver, and Laramie street scenes were also damaged.
Along with other buildings and street sets, the remaining piece of Spartacus Square was destroyed in 1987.
Similar to the 1957 fire, this was thought to have been started intentionally.
Three years later, a second fire was purposefully lit in the back lot.
The majority of Courthouse Square, the Ben Hur set, and the New York Street set were all demolished.
The back lot saw the eighth fire in 1997.
Courthouse Square was once more partially demolished, but most of it was spared.
Park history
Accountants suggested a new tour in the studio commissary would boost earnings soon after Music Corporation of America acquired Universal Pictures in 1962.
The modern tour was introduced on July 15, 1964, and it consists of a series of dressing room tours, sneak peaks at live performances, and later, staged events.
Over time, this developed into a complete theme park.
The motion picture production that formerly attracted audiences to Universal Studios Hollywood is now overshadowed by the staged events, stunt demonstrations, and high-tech rides. The narrated tram tour (previously known as "Glamor Trams") still travels around the studio's active backlot.
Areas and attractions
The two distinct regions of Universal Studios Hollywood are joined by a system of escalators known as the Starway.
The Upper Lot and Lower Lot are the names of these locations.
In 2021, there will be ten rides, seven shows, and two play areas at Universal Studios Hollywood.
Each lot has a variety of rides, performances, and attractions in addition to restaurants, bars, and stores selling goods.
